The verdict has long been established on laser skin resurfacing treatments: they’re an excellent way to subtly and beautifully transform the skin. Our team at RoseHall Medical Aesthetics has personally delivered these results for many patients looking for a rejuvenating treatment.
But would-be patients still wonder—what’s the experience actually like? What about prep and aftercare?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire laser skin resurfacing experience, from consulting with our team at RoseHall Medical Aesthetics of Bowie, MD to aftercare best practices and more.
Skin Resurfacing Consultation and Prep
The first step in successful skin resurfacing takes place well before you actually receive the treatment. Namely, it’s important to first determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure, and to be educated on what it entails.
In a consultation with one of our medical aesthetics experts—Dr. Jamieson or Dr. Miles—you will be walked through the entire treatment process. We center our laser skin resurfacing treatments around your personal preferences, so be ready to identify which imperfections you’re looking to target.
We will then craft a treatment plan that best serves your needs while keeping you informed of every step in the treatment.
The initial consultation stage is also an opportune time to provide some recommendations in terms of steps you can take before the procedure to maximize your chances of success.
Each case is individualized, but in general, medical aesthetics experts agree on the following laser skin resurfacing prep guidelines:
- Minimize sun exposure and/or tanning beds for at least a month prior to treatment, and use sunscreen often
- Avoid minocycline and any other medications that can cause photosensitivity for at least 3 days before the procedure
- Abstain from having any chemical peels or other resurfacing procedures done for at least a month prior to the procedure
- Be transparent with your provider about any active infections, skin conditions, bleeding disorders, or other issues that may affect your eligibility for the treatment, and follow any recommendations they provide to manage the issue(s).
This is not an exhaustive or universal list, but the general idea is to protect your skin for several weeks before the procedure and follow any of your provider’s other prep guidelines.
The Day of Treatment
When you’ve done your prep and have endured the wait to undergo that game-changing skin resurfacing treatment, the first step is to numb the treatment area.
Once the area is ready to be treated, our team at RoseHall Medical Aesthetics offers multiple treatments to unveil a smoother layer of skin, resolving various imperfections on the surface.
Morpheus8 is an innovative microneedling treatment that uses fractional bipolar radiofrequency energy to stimulate key healing processes several millimeters beneath the skin’s surface. By precisely targeting and heating these deeper layers of skin, Morpheus8 encourages collagen production, which in turn restores elasticity and firmness for a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Morpheus8 can treat many kinds of imperfections, including uneven skin tone, dark spots, sun damage, and much more.
Hollywood SpectraTM, given its name for the camera-ready results it delivers, uses a dual-wavelength laser that allows it to target a broad range of imperfections. Whether you’re targeting sun damage, rough texture, uneven tone, or a number of other issues, Hollywood SpectraTM is widely considered one of the best treatments in the business for creating that incredibly smooth, fresh-faced appearance.
Immediately following treatment, your provider may apply an ointment or other topical solution. You may also have a dressing applied. Generally, both the procedures themselves and the aftercare period are comfortable, but ice packs and standard pain relievers can be used to manage any discomfort.
As for the healing process, you can expect new skin to develop throughout the treated area within a week or two. As always, your particular case may vary slightly, and you should always defer to your provider’s recommendations in all things prep and aftercare.
Skin Resurfacing Aftercare Guidelines
The particular treatment you receive can affect your aftercare recommendations, but there is also plenty of overlap between most commonly used laser skin resurfacing methods when it comes to aftercare.
For example, regardless of which treatment you receive, you will want to avoid potential irritants for at least 2-4 weeks following your resurfacing procedure, which includes sun exposure, cosmetic products, and any other treatments that apply pressure and/or friction to the area.
It’s also important to be mindful of any possible infection risks, which means avoiding public swimming pools and other situations that carry an increased risk of infection.
In most cases, laser skin resurfacing patients will want multiple treatments over a period of several weeks or months in order to produce significant results. Whatever your plan is, it’s imperative that you follow aftercare guidelines between each session (er, “between-care”?) as well as the time period following your last session.
And as always, it’s crucial that you follow any and all aftercare guidelines outside of these general tips as provided by your aesthetics expert at RoseHall Medical Aesthetics.
